Fun's Vegas Set Celebrates 'Young' Success (CONCERT REVIEW) Aug 31st 2012, 23:58 Celebuzz Fun's Vegas Set Celebrates 'Young' Success (CONCERT REVIEW) http://www.celebuzz.com/2012-08-31/funs-vegas-set-celebrates-young-success-concert-review/ Aug 31st 2012, 23:15 Although the music lives up to its name sonically, virtually all of Fun's sophomore album Some Nights seems divined from the school of Outkast's "Hey Ya," a tune which many fans still don't realize offered a sobering and even sad look at love beneath its irresistible shimmer of anthemic melodies and pop hooks. Perhaps unsurprisingly, those nuances are of even less importance when the group performs live, at least evidenced by their recent appearance atop Las Vegas' Cosmopolitan Hotel. As the latest act to participate in Samsung's concert series curated to commemorate the company's new Galaxy SIII phone, it seemed appropriate that the commercial context of the band's appearance faded into the background as hundreds of screaming fans chanted along in unison with lead singer Nate Ruess. Samsung invited Celebuzz to take a test drive with the device at Fun's Vegas show, where the band demonstrated that blockbuster singles like "We Are Young" are the tip of an iceberg of talent even if the band has yet to demonstrate comparable versatility. Is Fun's "We Are Young" destined to age well? Anyone with an even superficial knowledge of Queen's discography will correctly observe that the group more than passingly resembles its predecessors' vocal style, but the music owes a greater debt to the likes of Kanye West, whose structural experimentations aren't necessarily anything new but have turned hip-hop instrumentals into complex mini-symphonies. The vocoder effects that transform Ruess' voice on "Some Nights" are neither technical punctuation nor camp, but a flourish added in to give the final choruses an otherworldly feeling the rest of the song's been building to. Ryan lochte, Prince harry party in vegas 7 Photos » Standouts in the set included a terrific rendition of "It Gets Better," albeit one stripped of the machine-gun percussion that opens the song on Some Nights. The band turned the song into more of an anthem – or perhaps it was just the crowd that did that, as a great throng of voices parroted the chorus back at the trio. "Carry On," meanwhile, was met with almost as much enthusiasm as "We Are Young," which they neither played first nor saved for last, in the process leveling the playing field for attendees to appreciate these other terrific (or at least equally catchy) songs. "All Alone," perhaps the closest song on Some Nights to their actual "Hey Ya," easily glossed over its serious lyrics with pop sheen and sheer volume, even when the crowd matched Ruess word for word. But as Fun wrapped up its set with a charming, not-quite-featherweight version of The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want," it was clear there's more to their sound than sub-Freddie Mercury melodies and a dumb-luck home run; crossover, one hit wonders (so far) or not, this is a band that has some genuine potential, operating effortlessly as a commercial conduit for sugary pop that incorporates some really interesting creativity. And that's not a backhanded compliment: while milquetoast pop masquerading as accidentally-successful indie-folk dominates the national consciousness, Fun demonstrates that the appetite for great pop-rock remains strong, and appreciates most when it comes with real artistic chops. Clint Eastwood's few minutes at the podium seem to upstage the evening's main event, nominee Mitt Romney's acceptance speech. In fact, Eastwood's rambling, ad libbed vaudeville routine, in which he argued with an empty chair that he pretended was President Barack Obama, was so strange that it seemed all anyone watching could talk about (judging by the Twitter response). But it did make for riveting, must-watch television. While viewers at home may have been scratching their heads, the audience in the hall went wild for the 82-year-old screeen legend, who veered from one topic to another in a speech that was clearly off the cuff. By the end, when he got the crowd to utter his famous line, "Go ahead, make my day," it didn't matter that he had offered only minimal praise for Romney and running mate Paul Ryan. Why didn't it matter and how did Romney follow Eastwood's act? He'd just delivered a strong (virtual) b***hslap to the (imaginary) opponent, and he had just created the viral moment that would keep people talking about the convention all weekend. Eastwood's comic aggression was even more jarring if you watched the whole evening, not just the final hour as shown on the networks. Several members of Romney's church gave testimonials to the candidate's personal generosity with his time, money, and attention. This painted a picture of Romney as compassionate — in contrast to the recent Democratic ad blitz painting him as an uncaring tycoon who profited from the outsourcing of countless jobs as leader of private equity investment firm Bain Capital. Celebs Who Have Gone Into Politics 15 Photos » There was also a performance from gray-haired, harmonica-wielding former American Idol champ Taylor Hicks, which reinforced Ryan's jibe at Romney's old-school musical taste. And Romney's own speech was full of emotion, whether it was pride in his wife and sons, or concern for the unemployed, or sympathy with those who voted for Obama's theme of Hope and Change four years ago but were now disappointed that they were worse off than before. Sure, he criticized Obama, but more in sorrow than in anger — "I wish President Obama had succeeded because I want America to succeed". He was so full of I-feel-your-pain empathy and eagerness to seem like a warm human and not a number-crunching android that he might have been mistaken for a Democrat. Indeed, he made his entrance not from backstage but from the convention floor, spending several minutes shaking hands with delegates, in a way that no presidential nominee has since one of Romney's predecessors as governor of Massachusetts, Democrat Michael Dukakis. Plus, it went on twice as long as it was supposed to, delaying Romney's speech until well after 10:30 ET, so that around half of it was delivered after 11, when local newscasts may have cut him off. Romney's speech, toward which the convention had been building all week, now seemed like an afterthought. Here was Romney's best chance to introduce himself to America, and all people could think about was the man in the chair who wasn't there, and the oldtimer who'd hijacked the evening in order to wrestle a ghost.
